Yes, exactly, it's totally normal that you don't have such a strong erection during practice, and that it goes away completely sometimes. With time, it will get better. Your body has to get used to this new way of arousal first.
The more you practice, the faster you will improve. If you practice only once a week, it will be slower. It doesn't matter if you finish the exercise with an orgasm or not. If you would like to have an orgasm, but you can't manage it with the new method yet, you can use your old method in between.
